Book Review

                                        Book Review

Title:  The Model Wife

Author:  Suzanne Fagence Cooper

Genre:  History and Romance

Classification:  Non Fiction

Synopsis:  A fascinating insight into the day to day life of the Victorian era.  Effie rose from middle class to the inner circle of Royalty, but was snubbed by the Queen for most of her life  The book highlights the values and attitudes that molded appearances and perceptions of the time.  It gives historical background to famous paintings and shows how the art world moved from natural landscape scenes and portraiture into the Pre-Raphaelite movement.  If you are interested in how society changes and evolves, you will find the book a good read.

Favourite Part:  My favorite part is when the Queen invites Effie to appear in Court, but only just manages to be polite.  She thought Effie was too risque, verging on indecency.  Appearances are everything for Royalty.

Recommendation: I recommend this book for people who love art and history. It would suit older teenagers, possibly art students, and people who have a rebel streak.

Rating:       1 strongly disagree     2 disagree      3 neutral       4 agree      5  strongly agree

                          Make a good movie  -    5                               Page turner  -     4

                         Nail-biter  -     3                                               Satisfactory ending  -  5

Conclusion: In a few decades time, people will look back at 2020 and learn about a world in lock down because of a global pandemic.  Writing is a way of keeping a record of our lives.  If we did not have stories to look back on, our lives would be imperfect. It would be like going on a big OE but having nothing to look at.
